Preparation !

Now, it is the time for both me & my wife getting even more busy in preparing ourself for the arrival of our baby boy. It's only about a month left to baby's due date. There are still many things that we have not done yet. E.g washing & drying baby's clothing & napkins, finalising all the necessary items to be purchased, arrangement of our confinement nanny, hiring a house-cleaner, list and buy all the herbs & supplements needed to consume before & during confinement period, finalising on our baby's name, & many many more.

We have also prepared a check-list on items to bring to hospital when it's time to deliver. Picture shown on the left is another photo showing some of the baby stuff we have bought.

The 2 pictures below are the 1st baby's clothing we have purchase for our baby during our shopping at Jusco, Seremban 2. The picture on the left is a long-sleeve shirt with long pants, whereas on the right side one is a short- sleeve with a cap, booties & mittens. And only after the experience of shopping for baby clothing only I realise that these baby clothing can be more expensive than adults clothing! But, they are just cute right?! :p

Christmas Fever!

Today, there's a group of more than 15 hospital staffs at Sunway Medical Center were busy singing Christmas songs from 1 department to another & from 1 floor to another. It has drawn many visitors' & patients' attention. Some of them even gather along with the group & sing along with them. We saw a few people start taking photos, and of course, we are one of them! :)

Personally, I think they are doing a great job. They have managed to make a stressful place to a more lively place. They have brought up a lot of smiling faces in the hospital. Me & my wife definitely welcome the idea!
Cheers & Thumb up for their hard work!

Baby's 9th Scanning

Today is our 9th visit to Dr Jason's clinic at Sunway Medical Hospital. Our baby is now 35 weeks & 5 days old, weighing about 2.59kg. He is approximately 600 grams heavier compare to previous scanning result.

Another 2 more days to go, our baby will be 36 weeks old. Dr Jason Lim told us that, anytime after 37 weeks onwards, the baby is called a "Full Term" baby, which means he's a full-grown baby & safe to be born without any danger. Whereas, on the other hand, if a baby that is born before 37 weeks old, he/she is called a "Pre-mature" baby.

p/s: A "Pre-mature" baby's life could be in danger if he/she is not being treated properly. Therefore, an incubator equipped with life-supporting facilities is needed for the baby in order to ensure his/her organs will continue to grow until it can function independently.

During this visit, we have requested Dr Jason Lim to scan some beautiful pictures of our baby for us to keep. Pictures shown on above were the latest images of our baby face. We can clearly see the head, eyes, ears, nose, both arms & we are so lucky to capture a picture with his mouth open, as shown in the 1st picture. Pictures below are some images of the baby's feet length (approx. 6.67cm), baby's waist length (approx. 31.3cm) & a close-up image of our baby's heart. You can even see the main arteries/veins & heart chambers in the picture.

Baby's Corner

In preparing for the arrival of the new member to our house, we have bought quite a number of things needed for the baby care. And, we also need to think where to keep all these baby's stuff. As such, one of the corners of our house has unofficial becomes the baby's corner, but that will be a temporary solution at the moment. haha...

Picture beside shows a number of our baby stuffs we have purchased for the past few months. We have baby napkins, wet wipes, baby cot, mattress, towel, milk bottles, steriliser, shampoo, lotions, powders & many many more. Oh ya... and also the Stemlife package that we have signed up for the baby! :p

However, there are still many more to come. E.g baby stroller, car seat, breast pump, milk powder, diapers, etc & etc. All these for sure, will come in the later stage.

So, now in my house, we already have a Baby's Corner! Strictly for baby's stuff only...
Hahaha!

Baby's 8th Scanning

From the 7th scanning onwards, me & my wife are require to visit Dr Jason Lim once every 2 weeks. My wife is now in the 3rd trimester of the pregnancy period. Extra cautious need to be taken into consideration, e.g healthy eating habits, cannot sit or stand too long, proper sleeping positions, sleep early, reduce in workloads, etc.

I have started doing simple foot massage for my wife almost every night to help on improving the blood circulation. This will also prevent or reduce the chances of her getting backache, numbness or cramps. As usual, I'll then sing nursery songs or telling stories to my baby before going to bed. He is now 33 weeks & 3 days old, weighting approximately 1.98kg.

Keep it up, Lau Po! & my Boy Boy!

Confinement Cookbook

Approximately 7 weeks to go before the delivery date. My wife's GM has recommended a confinement cookbook to us. We have read through it & found that all the recipes were written in simple & easy steps, in Mandarin and English as well. Even, a guy like me who only know how to cook very simple meal like omelets can also transform to become a more professional chef to cook a more sophisticated dish by just following the instructions from the book.

We then bought the book from Popular bookstore at IOI Mall Puchong. It only cost us about RM20 & we have a better idea now about the confinement meals.

Start wearing your apron & make a good meal now.
Engkau Boleh! Nanny Boleh! Daddy pun Boleh! :D

Knowing more about Good Names

I can still remember about 5 - 6 yrs ago, me & my wife had consulted a FengShui sifu to calculate & analyse both our Chinese character names whether they are in good FengShui or not. We realise by then that each of our Chinese character & its arrangement can affect a person's destiny, characteristics & lucks. E.g Surname represents our ancestors & their inheritances, and the link between the surname & middle name represents the relationship between us & our ancestors or parents, etc.

In the market, there are a lot of books available that talks about importance of having a good names, and also how to find a good name according to your birth date. My wife's brother had shared the book shown here with us, which is quite simple and easy to understand. It has illustrated the explanation with simple guidelines and examples on finding a good name. However, since it is written in Mandarin, I had no chance to learn more from this book. We hope that this will help us in getting a good name our baby boy. :)

Reference Books for my wife

Here is just a small portion of reference books read by my wife during her pregnancy. Most of them are magazines, like Parenting, Today's parents, Mother & Baby, Mama, etc.

The Chinese book shown on the picture beside (Pregnancy during 30's), was bought by us during our honeymoon trip to Taiwan. We would recommended to our friends to have similar reference book, especially pregnant ladies.

It provides quite a detail explanations from pre-prenancy, to 10 months pregnancy period for both the mother & baby, possible symptoms that may occur during pregnancy, what are the dos & don'ts, diet & recommended exercise programs, confinement procedures & diet, the know-how on handling new born babies like breast feeding, & many more.

Baby's 7th Scanning

Today our baby will be 31 weeks & 5 days old. His weight is slightly heavier compared to previous scanning, at approximately 1.86kg. As usual, Dr Jason Lim scanned my wife tummy to check on our baby's condition. Besides knowing the baby is healthy, the baby also looks much bigger.

Our baby's movement has become more aggressive recently, especially late in the night (~10pm til 12pm). His hearing seems to be more sensitive as well. Everytime when I try to talk to him, or sing for him, he will react to my voice by punching or kicking his mother belly. Sometimes, he even will stop moving around when I ask him to do so. Haha!

That's really Amazing!!
Go! Go! My Baby Power!

Baby's 1st Story Book

On 3rd Nov, a very find Saturday morning, after sending my wife's car to service center, we have decided to go to Alamanda, located at Putrajaya. It was our 2nd visit to the mall. The 1st visit was dated about 2-3 yrs back when 3 of us (my wife, sis & I) went to the mall to celebrate Chrismas & my sis's birthday (My sis is a christmas girl :p).

We bought some clothes for my wife's new born nephew. Then we have also taught of buying a story book so that apart from singing songs, I can start to do some story-telling to our baby boy. It is something I'm looking forward to, as now I can alternate between singing nursery songs and telling stories to him at night.

This book contains 4 different stories, which are "Pinocchio", "The frog Prince", "The 3 Wishes" & "The Wizard of Oz". These are common fairy tales that we used to listen to or read when we were young.

More on Nursery Songs

One day, my wife has bought back some children songs VCDs to show me.
Wow! I was very relieve when I saw it because these VCDs were my saviour. Although the video & sound quality are very "Pasar malam" stuff, but to me, the lyrics of those dozens of songs have been very helpful to me. Now, whenever I want to sing new songs to my baby at night, i don't have to crack my head any more. Oh Yes, Baby!

Here are 2 so-called oldies nursery songs which I wanted to add into the list.

Baa, Baa, Black sheep,
Have you any wool,
Yes sir, Yes sir,
3 bags full,
1 for my master,
And 1 for the dame,
And 1 for the little boy who lives down the lane.

Mary had a little lamb,
Little lamb, little lamb,
And Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece is white as snow.

Baby's 6th Scanning

There are 2 good news during our 6th visit to Dr Jason Lim's clinic.

First, was my mother-in-law. She was with us during the scanning. She is very happy to witness the scanning and find out about my wife & baby's condition. Even though we all have to wait for more than 2 hrs for our turn, but it was a pleasure to have her accompany us this time. The 1st scanned picture only shows a portion of the baby's image, but this time we can see a much clearer picture of our baby's face features.

The second good news is... finally we are able to confirm the gender of our baby!! What can you notice in the red circle?! This picture was taken from the bottom of our baby's buttock. Try clicking on the image to enlarge it for better viewing.

And Yes, you are right!
It's the little tiny "Birdie" & Dr Jason Lim has confirmed that he is 100%, a baby BOY!

Our baby is now 27 weeks and 5 days old, weighing approximately 1.1 kg. Gambatte Boy! My Boy!

My Baby's 1st lesson

2 days ago on 10th Oct, before sleeping, my wife encourage me to start singing nursery songs to our baby. I though that it was a great idea, but guess what, I then realise that I can't even sing a complete song!!! Not even the "ABC" song!!! HAHA!! What a shame. Anyway, I still manage to get through the 1st attempt with the help from my wife. I'm sure there will be more songs coming, so it is better for me to write down the lyric here. :p

ABCDEFG,
HIJKLMNOP,
QRS,
TUV,
W & XYZ,
Now you know my ABC,
Come & sing along with me.

What are Stem Cells ?

Q: What are Stem Cells?
A: Stem cells are human’s “master” cells because they are the ones that creates tissues, organs (brain, etc) & systems (nerves, muscles, etc) in the body.

They can be found in the building blocks of blood and immune system & its readily to reproduce into:
1) Red blood cells (haemoglobin), which able carry oxygen to all the cells in the body.
2) White blood cells (antibody), which enable cells to fight infection.
3) Platelets, which aid in clotting in the event of injury.

The ability of cord blood stem cells to differentiate, or change into other types of cells in the body is a new discovery that holds significant promise for many individuals.

Q: Where are stem cells can be found?
A: Stem cells are found in the umbilical cord blood, peripheral blood & bone marrow.

Q: What are Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cells?
A: Umbilical cord blood, otherwise known simply as “cord blood’ or “placental blood”, is the blood that remains in the newborn’s umbilical cord and placenta following birth. Cord blood stem cells are the key building blocks of the human blood and immune system. These stem cells can be used to generate red blood cells and cells of the human immune system.

Q: Why we choose to store Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cells rather than other methods?

A: The baby’s umbilical cord blood is a rich and valuable source of stem cells, which are genetically unique to the baby and his/her family. It is an alternative source of stem cell transplantation, where traditionally bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells have been used.

1) Umbilical cord blood stem cells are less prone to develop Graft versus Host Disease (GVHD) than either bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells. This is because the umbilical cord stem cells have not yet develop into features that could be recognized by our own body cells and tissues.

2) Umbilical cord blood stem cells can only be collected once in a lifetime during birth.

3) Collection of cord blood is non-invasive & painless to mother & child.

4) Baby's cord blood is easily collected. Within minutes of delivery, the cord blood stems cells are collected, then taken for processing & storage at cord blood stem cell bank.

What is Prenatal 3D/4D Ultrasound ?

Q: What is Elective Prenatal 3D/4D Ultrasound?
A: It has the ability to choose to have a n0n-diagnostic ultrasound (3D/4D) that able to identify the baby's heartbeat, check position, identify gender (if desired), document the number of babies & to obtain prenatal keepsake pictures shown below.

Q: What are the differences between 3D/4D Elective Ultrasound compare to Prenatal Diagnostic (traditional 2D) Ultrasound?
A: During an elective 3D/4D ultrasound, parents able to spend quality time with their baby by looking at coloured life-like images using a volumetric analysis that creates 3 dimensional (3D) photos, with an additional fourth dimension (4D) to view on baby's movements. Enable to enhance the bonding process before birth.

Whereas, diagnostic ultrasound is a two dimensional (2D) scan which is best performed around 18 - 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Q: When is the best time (during pregnancy) to schedule for an Elective Prenatal 3D/4D Ultrasound Scan?
A: Pregnant women may come as early as 12 weeks, again at 18+ weeks for gender identification & once again between 24-34 weeks where the best results for the 3D/4D images can be obtained.

Q: Is the Elective 3D/4D Ultrasound Safe?
A: Ultrasound has been used safely in obstetrics for over 35 yrs, during this time there has never been any documented harmful effects to mother or her baby before or after birth.

Elective Ultrasound sessions only last about 20-30 minutes at most & much time is spent manipulating the captured images while the ultrasound beam is actually off. Picture below illustrates on the 3D images of the baby.

Q: Will I always get a beautiful picture of my baby?
A: Usually, but not always if the baby's face is not at a favourable position. The repeat scan will be done an hour later.

Besides, it is beneficial to keep mother well hydrated to ease the ultrasound beam travels better through fluids than tissues & thus enhances the images we see on the baby.

Baby's 5th Scanning

As usual, 19th Sept is the date for us to pay our monthly visit to Dr. Jason Lim's clinic. It will be our fifth ultrasound scanning. We are still unable to confirm on our baby's gender during this scanning. The baby is now 23 weeks & 4 days old. Anyway, for both of us, the most important news we would like to hear from Dr. Jason is that our baby is healthy and he/she is doing great with the development.

Me & my wife had notice a huge difference in terms of my wife's tummy size. It grows so rapidly in just within a month's time before the scanning. As expected, my wife did gain about 3kg this time. Overall, she's still fit within 12kg range scale. However, Dr Jason has reminded my wife again to watch on her weight gain. haha... Don't worry, my dear wife, I will always support you. Oh Yes!

FYI, the ideal weight gain for a pregnant women is about 12kg. However, it varies according to your initial weight, age, and health status when you are conceiving.

What is Down's Syndrome ?

Q: What is Down's Syndrome?
A: It's a birth defect occuring in about 1 of every 1000 births, in which an extra N0. 21 chromosome is present in the developing foetusfro the time of conception.

Q: What are the impacts that can cause to the baby?
A: It may cause mental retardation (often mild to moderate), may have visible physical characteristics & some may have medical problems eg. heart defects.

Q: Who will have higher possibilities to give birth to Down's Syndrome babies?
A: In theory, posibilities rises with an increse in maternal age pregnancies or history of Down's Syndrome. Maternal age (35 & above) has traditionally been used as a cut-off point for performing a prenatal diagnosis to detect Down's Syndrome in pregnant women. However, 80% of Down's Syndrome babies are born to women who are less than 35 yrs old.

Q: What is Double Test/ Triple Test?
A: It's a blood test that measures substances in the pregnant mother's blood.
Substances like AFP (Alpha-feto protein), free β-hCG (free beta-human chorionic ganodotrophin) & uE3 (conjucgated oestrial). The level of these substances are used in combination with the woman's ageto determinethe statistical risk of Down's Syndrome in the baby. The level of AFP alone is use to determine if there is an increased risk of neural tube defect such as anencephaly or spina bifida.

Q: How is the risk can be calculated?
A: Babies with Down's Syndrome tend to produce less AFP than normal babies, whereas babies with neural tube defect produce much greater levels of AFP. β-hCG level tends to be higher when Down's Syndrome is present. Anaylsis & estimation of the risk is performed by using a computer& reported as a numerial risk based on the determined blood markers, age & gestation of the fetus.

Q: What does the result of a maternal serum marker screening mean?
A: The result describes the risk of giving birth to Down's Syndrome baby relative to the average pregnant women, reported as a numerical risk compared to a risk cut-off. The risk of 35 yrs old women (1:250) has ben used as the risk cut-off, where if a patient's risk is > 1:250, the serum is reported positive.

Q: What are further tests that will be offered if a patient test result is positive?
A: If the patient's test results is positive, it does not necessary mean that the baby has the disorder, but it means that the doctor will suggest the patient with some additional test, eg. Amniocentesis.

Q: What is Amniocentesis & what will it show?
A: Amniocentesis is a test in which the doctor obtains a small sample of fluid that surrounds the developing foetus. That fluid can be use to diagnose Down's Syndrome. Result will be shown in 2 - 3 weeks later. A small degree of risk may involved.

Q: What is the best time for Down's Syndrome screening?
A: Blood test should be done between 14-18 weeks of pregnancy. Unreliable result may be obtained if the blood sample is taken too early during the pregnancy.

Baby's 4th Scanning

Usually during 14th - 20th weeks of prenancy, every mother is required to do a blood test and a detail scanning of the baby. My wife has done both of tests together with an additional "Down's syndrome Test". The blood test result turned out to be very good (Honey, I love U !) & also it is negative on the down's syndrome test.

1st picture = A close-up image showing our baby's head (eyes, nose, mouth & ears) & heart

2nd picture = A picture showing the upper body

3rd picture = A full body image of our 19 weeks & 4 days old baby
(Scanning was done on 23rd August)

Dr Jason Lim was happy on the overall growing progress of the baby in terms of its size and the weight. However, the gender of the baby still cannot be determined. He has mentioned that it's quite difficult to get a very clear ultrasound scan image for my wife. If we really want to see a much clearer image, we can always choose to go for 3d/4d ultrasound scanning, which need to be booked and arranged prior to the scanning.

Anyway, he has advised us to wait until the baby is >28th weeks old, where baby's organ is huge enough to give a clearer and better scanning result. We agree with the doctor as we are more than happy to know that baby is doing great. Gender is not really important, it will just make our shopping direction clearer. :p

Baby's 3rd Scanning

The above picture is showing our baby's full size image.

We are now able to see a rough image of our baby's head (HC), arm (AC) & the feet (FL) with its size & age. Our baby's heart is beating fast, & we can even observe some slight movements of the baby's arms & legs. However, baby's gender is still unknown to us since the baby is back facing us. It is difficult for Dr Jason Lim to check on the gender. Hopefully, the baby will be more cooperative during our next check up. :p

The baby is now 15 weeks and 1 day old, scanned on 23rd July.

Keep it up, Baby! We love U!

Baby's 2nd Scanning

We had our 2nd scanning on 25th June. Our baby is now 11 weeks & 2 days old, the size is approximately 4cm. Baby's condition is very healthy.

Dr Jason Lim has advised my wife to control her diet so that she will not gain too much weight during this pregnancy. So, my wife has decided to stop consuming milk and will concentrate on food supplements. Besides, since she is having morning sickness, vomit a few times a day, she has lost about 2kg as compare to her weight during the 1st visit.
How heavy is her? Well, I was told (or I should said warned and threated! haha!) not to reveal it here! :p

Baby's 1st scanning

After several discussions with my wife, family members & some friends, we have decided to have our 1st ultrasound scanning at Dr Jason Lim clinic in Sunway Medical Center. We had the 1st scanning on 29th May 2007. We were so excited & curious about what we are going to see, the baby's health, the size of the tiny baby as well as if we are able to know the gender. We were so excited until we have forgotten to get the scanned copies from the doctor.

Results ?? Well, the baby is about 5 weeks old now & only the size of a peanut. We even can see the heart is beating. Gender?? Still unknown

Guess what ?

In just about four months after our wedding ceremony on January, my wife suspects something has happened to her.

On the night of 15th May, we found this, shown in the above picture. Yah, you are right. My wife is PREGNANT !

We are shock but so happy to know about this news & suddenly, I realise that I am now not only a husband, but has also become a dad to this small little baby. :)

I get to know my wife when I was in my 3rd semester of my 1st year studies in Multimedia University located in Melacca in 1998. I still remember clearly that the event took place in the library & we were very busy preparing for our final exam.

We were just ordinary friends until my first attempt to share my feeling to her on 14th February 2001 (during Valentine's Day) & followed with our first official date on 25th March 2001. For four memorable years, we go dating like other lovely couples & then we had decided to tie the knot together. We had our ROM (Registration of Marriage) on 23rd April 2005.

About 2 years later, we organised our Chinese Wedding custom event on 7th January 2007 & we still have many plans on the way to built our sweet and happy family.

Introduction

Hi! My name is Eddie. This is the 1st blog that I have ever created & it's mainly dedicated to my 1st baby, who is expected to be born into this world around 13th January 2008. My wife & I are waiting anxiously for his/her arrival, to be part of our family members. I plan to record down every single moment of my 1st baby in this blog.
